Egor Demin, a freshman, is the No. 6 Seed BYU Triumphs Over VCU in NCAA Tournament Opener

 In a commanding display of skill and teamwork, the No. 6 seed BYU Cougars secured an 80-71 victory over the No. 11 seed VCU Rams in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on March 20, 2025.  This win propels BYU into the second round, marking their first advancement past the opening round since 2011. 

 Egor Demin: The Rising Star

 Freshman sensation Egor Demin played a pivotal role in the Cougars' triumph, contributing 15 points to the team's total.   Demin's journey to BYU is noteworthy given his 6-foot-9 frame. Hailing from Moscow, Russia, he honed his skills with the prestigious Real Madrid basketball program before committing to BYU in June 2024. 

 Demin's versatility and court vision have drawn comparisons to NBA talent Josh Giddey.  Due to his height and ability to play point forward, he is able to provide opportunities for his teammates and pose significant challenges to opposing defenses.

 Game Highlights

 The matchup between BYU and VCU was competitive from the outset.  The Rams took an early lead, but the Cougars responded with a decisive 12-2 run in the final minutes of the first half, entering halftime with a 39-28 advantage. 

 BYU's offensive strategy was effective, shooting 50% from the field and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities.  The Cougars outrebounded the Rams 40-31, with 14 offensive rebounds leading to a 16-7 edge in second-chance points. 

 VCU's Zeb Jackson delivered an impressive performance, scoring a season-high 23 points.  BYU maintained control and extended their lead to as much as 20 points, despite the Rams' efforts to close the gap in the second half. VCU managed to reduce the deficit to eight points in the final minute, but the Cougars' early dominance ensured their victory. 

 Coach Kevin Young's Impact

 Under head coach Kevin Young, a new era of BYU basketball began with the 2024–2025 season. Previously an assistant coach with the NBA's Phoenix Suns, Young brought a fresh perspective and strategy to the Cougars.  His leadership has been instrumental in integrating talents like Demin into the team's framework, fostering a cohesive unit capable of competing at the highest levels. 

 Looking Forward

 With this victory, BYU advances to face Wisconsin in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.   The Badgers, coming off a decisive win over Montana, will present a formidable challenge.  However, the Cougars' balanced offense, strong rebounding, and the emergence of players like Demin position them well for the upcoming contest.

 Demin's continued development and performance will be crucial as BYU aims to make a deep tournament run.  His unique skill set not only enhances the team's current dynamics but also garners attention from NBA scouts, highlighting his potential for a professional career.
