Bellingham's Bullet Header Secures Narrow Win for England in Euro 2024 Opener

England's Euro 2024 campaign got off to a winning start, but it was far from a convincing display. Gareth Southgate's men edged past a determined Serbia side 1-0 in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday, thanks to a solitary headed goal from teenage sensation Jude Bellingham.

The Three Lions, runners-up at Euro 2020, were expected to dominate this Group C encounter. However, Serbia, boasting a passionate home crowd at the Arena AufSchalke, had other ideas. England started brightly, controlling possession and creating early chances. Bukayo Saka, lively on the right flank, caused problems for the Serbian defense with his pace and trickery.

The breakthrough came in the 13th minute. Saka, cutting inside from the right, saw his deflected cross fall perfectly for the onrushing Bellingham. The young midfielder, displaying maturity beyond his years, rose majestically to steer a powerful header past the outstretched hand of Serbia's goalkeeper, Predrag Rajkovic.

England continued to threaten in the first half. Kyle Walker, venturing forward from right-back, almost doubled their lead with a dangerous cross that flashed just beyond the reach of Harry Kane and Phil Foden at the far post. However, the Three Lions' dominance waned as the half progressed. Serbia grew into the game, pressing England high up the pitch and disrupting their rhythm.

The second half was a tense affair. Serbia poured forward in search of the equalizer, with Dusan Vlahovic and Luka Jovic posing a constant threat. England's defense, marshaled by the experienced John Stones and Harry Maguire, held firm for the most part. However, there were moments of vulnerability, particularly on the counter-attack, where Serbia looked dangerous.

Rajkovic produced a brilliant save to deny Kane a late winner, tipping the England captain's header over the bar. At the other end, Jordan Pickford was equally impressive, keeping out a long-range effort from Aleksandar Mitrovic in the dying minutes.

Ultimately, England managed to hold on for a precious victory. While the performance wasn't entirely convincing, Southgate will be pleased to have secured three points in a difficult opening game.

Bellingham Shines

The star of the show for England was undoubtedly Jude Bellingham. The 19-year-old midfielder, already a star at Real Madrid, displayed his vast potential with a commanding performance. His goal, a powerful and well-directed header, showcased his aerial prowess and ability to arrive in dangerous positions.

Bellingham wasn't just a threat in the attacking third. He also impressed with his work rate and defensive discipline, breaking up Serbia's attacks and protecting the backline.  His performance bodes well for England's Euro 2024 campaign, as they look to go one step further than their runners-up finish in 2020.

Concerns Remain for England

Despite the win, England's performance will raise some concerns for Southgate. Their dominance in the first half fizzled out after the opening goal, and they struggled to control the game in the second period. Serbia exposed weaknesses in England's midfield, particularly in transitions, and the Three Lions were fortunate not to concede.

Southgate will need to address these issues before their next Group C clash against Denmark on Thursday. A more convincing performance will be required if England are to maintain their position at the top of the group and continue their quest for European glory.

Looking Ahead

England's opening victory in Euro 2024 is a positive start, but there's work to be done

They face a crucial match against Denmark next, and a win will put them in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages. However, Southgate's team will need to improve their overall performance and find a way to control games for longer periods if they are to seriously challenge for the title.
